Celebrating 45 years with The Co‑operative Bank
In late 1979, Allan Dorne saw a job advert in his local paper for an EDP (Electronic Data Processing clerk) with the PSIS.
The school-leaver didn't exactly know what EDP was, but applied anyway - thinking it would tide him over until he started university.
It turned out to be a vocation for life. Allan has just celebrated 45 years with The Co‑operative.
"When I got here I found the people really cared about what we were doing, and I was given interesting work from the get-go" and one opportunity led to another.
The number of technology change projects he's had the opportunity to be involved in or lead now counts in the hundreds.
Allan says there's always been something new to learn, challenges to work on, as well as a great team to work with, learn from and mentor.
"The ethos that we have today has permeated through the bank since the day I joined."
Embracing Te Ao Māori in leadership
Meet Anishea Te Ngaru (Ngāti Tahu - Ngāti Whaoa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa), The Co‑operative Bank's Northern Regional Manager.
After starting part time as a Consultant in 2007, Anishea now oversees branches and teams across the upper North Island and is a highly respected leader at the bank.
She is also one of our first kaimahi Māori (Māori employees) to participate in Te Ara Tāwhaiwhai - a Māori mentoring programme.
Anishea says that participating in the programme was a rich experience that helped her see and tap into her strengths as a kaimahi Māori and a leader, and will deliver long term benefits.
The programme also reinforced for her the many ways that elements of tikanga Māori (customs) are already reflected in how we work at the Co‑operative.
"A lot of what the Co‑operative is doing is whakawhānaungatanga (relating to others) - building and maintaining relationships, supporting collaborative growth, and a strong emphasis on connectedness; kaitiakitanga (guardianship) - our obligations and responsibilities in our roles and long-term thinking around what is sustainable for the Co‑operative; and kotahitanga (unity) - fostering a shared sense of belonging and recognising diversity."
Anishea says her Māori heritage has helped to shape her leadership style: a focus on creating a sense of belonging and strong collaborative relationships; recognising the diversity that we all have; and providing a space for everyone to be themselves, feel connected and included, and share what they know.
