Need help on how to send money overseas? Read on.

There are a few key differences between regular payments within New Zealand and international payments.

  • You need to have a safeguard approved phone
  • You can not schedule a future payment

You should also know that there is a fee for this service Scroll towards the bottom of the page for info.

There are two steps in making an overseas payments. Firstly, you have to create the payee (if you haven't already), then you can make the payment.

Create a payee

Once you login to Internet Banking you will see Payees in the navigation bar at the top of the page. Click on this and select International. On the International Payees page you should then tap Add Payee.

To create a payee you need to type the name of the person you are paying into the 'Full name' area. You'll then choose the 'Payment Destination' country of where the money is going to. This will tell us what information we need to collect to successfully make your payment, and so you may see our questions change on the screen.

The currency area determines the currency the person will receive into their account. We suggest a currency, but if you are able to pay in other currencies, you'll be able to choose to send a secondary currency using the drop down selector.

The next step is to add in the residential address of the person you are paying. For legal reasons this must be a residential address not a P.O. Box.

'Payment Purpose' is required for all International Payments. You can choose this from a list, and change it later on if you like.

'Reference details' is what will show on the receiving person’s bank account details - so this is where to put any payment references.

Next we need to add in bank details. There are a number options for doing this.

For Australia

If you are paying an Australian Account the easiest way is to search by the BSB number. The BSB code is a six-digit number used to identify the individual branch of every Australian bank (a BSB code would look something like 732-629).

In the Account and bank details section:

  • Expand the BSB/SWIFT/Routing code area by clicking into it
  • Type the BSB code
  • Cllick search

The bank details will be shown.

Check the bank details.

  • If the bank details are correct, click on the Bank name and we will fill add the info to the form.
  • If the search fails or the bank details are incorrect you can search for the bank by name and location. Simply click on the bank name search. Type in the name of the bank and the city/town and click search.

There may be a number of banks returned so scroll through the list until you find the one you want.

If neither of these searches work you can still type in the bank details yourself. If you choose this option you will need the following information

  • Bank Name
  • BSB number
  • Street Address

The last thing you need to do is add in the bank account number. Note for Australia you you only need the account number (don’t include the BSB part) e.g. 2602714-077.

Once you have completed everything you can save the payee. You will be prompted to get a verification code send to your mobile number. Once you successfully enter your verification code you will be asked if you want to do a payment. Select yes if you are ready to make the payment, or no if you want to do it later.

Making a Payment

The easiest way to make an International payment is to select Payees in the navigation bar at the top of the page. Click on this and select International, then the person you want to pay from the list of payees. Once selected you can check the details and then click the Pay button.

This will take you to the Pay and Transfer screen with the selected person’s payment details.

  • Click on the From box to select the account in the dropdown list.
  • Then choose the amount you want to send. There are two options for this:
    • You can choose either to transfer an amount in the foreign currency or
    • choose New Zealand dollars.
    • For example if you want the person to receive $30 Australian dollars the easiest way it to select the amount in Australian dollars.
  • Once you have entered the amount press the green 'Request a quote' button to continue. This will show you the exchange rate, fee, amount in New Zealand dollars and the total cost. We'll also show you the time you have left to accept the quote. These are normally live rates and they are only held for specific period of time, if time runs out, just request a new quote.

  • Happy with the quote? Click continue at the bottom right of the page.

You see the confirmation screen. You need you to agree to the terms and conditions of using the International Payments service - you can view them website beforehand if you'd like.

Success! Accept the Ts & Cs and click confirm. Magic! The payment is now winging its way overseas.

On the last 'Success' page you can print a copy of the payment for your records.

Note: If you don't print a copy, make a note of the Payment ID number on this page. If there are any issues this will make it easier for us to chase it up for you.
